Basswood BBQ

Friday evening (after Jack's soccer practice) we went to see Paul & Patti at the barbecue contest he competed in last weekend. It was at Basswood Resort, north of Kansas City.

Although we'd been by there before, we'd never actually been there. What a place. It's a 73-acre classic RV/campground that's been visited through the years by such people as President Truman, Bing Crosby and — more recently — Matthew McConaughey in his Airstream trailer. My favorite line from Basswood's Web site is about its "country-modern" accommodations.

Besides the fun of Paul's barbecue team, Jack got to ride the "hayless" hay-rack ride, play on the huge playground equipment, befriend some fishermen and ride on the golf cart with Uncle Paul.

If you think Jack looks excited here, you should've seen him after that can of pop.

Before we left, Jack and I walked over to see the live band. Complete with a banjo, ukelele, string bass ... and a washboard.

Ohhhhhhhh, BBQ, now there's something I can get in to. I love to grill and my teriyaki chicken has won a few awards. Simple recipie: 3/4 cup soy sauce, 3/4 cup brown sugar, 1 t garlic, 1 t ginger, 1 T Aji Mirin. It helps if the soy sauce is warm to blend better with the brown sugar. Also, stir it OFTEN to keep it from glazing up. I marinate for 12 hours prior to grilling.
