Of frogs and snails and dirt bike trails

Thanks, Andy, for inviting us up to ride dirt bikes this afternoon.
Jackson did really, really well!

"Our Time"

Just as I was leaving work yesterday around 5:30, Mike called me out of the blue to ask if Jack and I wanted to go to the Royals game with him and Synjin. We hadn't been to Kauffman Stadium all year, it was their last game of the season and it was a gorgeous night. "Sure!"
We had a little mix up with our tickets so we ended up just buying new ones, way up in the "cheap seats" (for only $5.50). The boys actually thought it was cool to be up so high.
It's obviously dark, but our view from the third-base line reminded me of a similar picture from...
...our family "vacation" to Kansas City in August of 1983!
(But back to the current century.) Last night's game was also memorable because we witnessed Detroit's Miguel Cabrera become the first Major Leaguer to achieve the triple crown in 45 years. In fact, he's only the 15th player to do it ever, joining the likes of Mickey Mantle, Ted Williams and Lou Gehrig. He got a standing ovation from the entire stadium, including from both dugouts.
Finally, we made our way down to our original seats, which — being only 22 rows from the field — were a tad bit closer.
You know, I don't think "Our Time" was just the Royals' marketing slogan for the year. It also describes two dads getting to take their sons to the ballpark on a random school night in the fall, eatin' peanuts out of the shell, doing the 7th-inning stretch together and cheering on the same team they did as kids.
I pray that "our time" lasts forever.

Hot fun in the summertime

Leslie sang at all three worship services today, so after the boys and I went to church, we ventured to a little "aquatic park" that we had never been to before. On the hottest day of the year.

Besides this great kiddie section, it has a rock-climbing wall, three big slides and a lazy river encircling the entire place. It turned out to be even better than I expected.

The boys did great together and we had a ton of fun.

Four-and-a-half hours later, this was on the drive home.

Adventure evening

It's hard to imagine, but sometimes Jackson gets annoyed with his little brother. So to give each of them some breathing room, attend an event that I wanted to and to spend some quality time together before summer winds down, Jack and I went out last night for "guy night."

We drove north past the airport to Platte City, an old river town and the county seat of its county. As we cruised down main street, even Jack thought this historic church looked cool, with ivy growing all the way up to the roof and birds flying in and out of the belfry.

We stopped by a Northwest Alumni Association picnic to see Coach Dorrell (the head football coach), some other friends and for something to eat.

Then it was off to see "Brave," a new Disney/Pixar movie. "Set in the highlands of 10th-century Scotland, a skilled archer defies an age-old custom, causing chaos in the kingdom. The ensuing peril forces Merida to discover the meaning of true bravery in order to undo a beastly curse before it's too late." It was the first movie just the two of us have gone to see together since "WALL-E" four years ago.

I let Jack choose anywhere he wanted to sit and, although we were the first ones in the theatre, he picked the very top row. I put the armrest between us in the upright position and he sat right up against me for almost the whole movie — especially the scary parts. He loved the movie. On our way out, we put a dollar in the photo booth for a special souvenir.

Because Jack had opted not to get any treats at the movie theatre (not even Junior Mints!), our last stop was at Dairy Queen so he could get the "Blizzard of the Month."
He was stuffed ... and it was a great guy night.

Aquamaniacs

The boys were at the pool for 7½ hours yesterday — from 9:15 a.m. to about 1:15 p.m. with Leslie, then back for 2½ hours in the evening with me!
Jack "surfing" through the water on Mike's back.
Landon getting launched.
Synjin's turn.
We stayed 'til after 10 p.m.!
